Virginia solar incentives

Understand the programs and tax treatment that can support a qualifying project.

Virginia’s main solar benefits.

Property & statutory requirements apply

Qualifying solar property exemption

Up to 25 kW DC
Virginia law exempts qualifying solar facilities up to 25 kW DC under the referenced residential/accessory-use provisions from state and local taxation. This exempts qualifying equipment value; it is not a check for the cost of your system. Local certification and assessment procedures matter.
Utility approval required

Net energy metering

Utility bill credits
Approved customer-generators can use eligible solar production to offset electricity purchases under their utility’s rules. Size limits, export treatment, annual settlement and applicable rate schedules must be checked for the specific account.
Prices vary

Renewable energy certificates

Market-based revenue
Solar production may generate RECs that can be sold through a broker or aggregator. Eligibility, certificate ownership, registration, contract terms and market demand determine proceeds; there is no guaranteed statewide payment per panel.

Businesses & nonprofits

Separate solar or storage tax treatment, commercial federal credits and financing may apply. Eligibility depends on project size, ownership, equipment and construction timing.
